School nursing
The School nursing service offers a primary prevention and early intervention model of care with core services undertaking screening and delivering primary prevention approaches to improving health and well being. The service is offered to all school age children with targeted early interventions to address identified or emerging needs at either an individual, group or community level. The PCT covers a very diverse population, some wards identified as the most deprived in the country, have a high numbers of children living in those areas.
We work in partnership with Birmingham City council on the “Brighter Futures: Planning for outcomes” project, which looks to the development of preventative and early intervention services to improve outcomes for all children in line with the Children and Young People‘s Partnership Strategy. Where teenage pregnancy is a concern within the city, school nurses work closely with the teenage pregnancy leads and deliver drop in and support services to young people in partnership with Youth workers.
School nurses work in collaboration with statutory and voluntary organisations to deliver services.
They are ideally placed to address public health issues around obesity, smoking, alcohol and substance misuse, sexual health issues and immunisations. They have a key role in safeguarding vulnerable children and young people.
