Health visiting

Our health visitors give support and advice to families on diet and nutrition, accident prevention, immunisation, and managing minor childhood ailments.

We help children and parents find out about community services that can help them, such as children’s centres and nurseries. We also offer advice in your home, in a clinic or over the phone.

We work with social care colleagues to ensure that children who have been identified as being abused or neglected, or who are at risk, are protected.

Who can use the service

Children aged 0 to 5 years old and their families across the NHS Birmingham East and North area. Find out if you are covered by NHS Birmingham East and North.

How to use the service

All new births in the area are automatically referred to the appropriate Health Visiting team. If you are new to the area, your GP will let us know and we will be in touch. Families can also self refer into the service at any time. Get contact details for the Health Visiting service from your GP, if you do not already have this.

Where we provide the service

The services operate from clinics and some GP practices in the area. We also do home visits.

When we provide the service

Between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.

What to expect when you attend for the first time

If you are a new parent, we will usually get in touch around the 14th day after the birth of your baby. A member of the team will arrange a visit to your home. We will then discuss and agree what support you need.

How you can look after yourself

Contact your GP if you have concerns about your child’s health.

What if I can’t use the service?

Contact the Family Information Service at Birmingham City Council.
