Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Man taking COPD test with breathing equipmentChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an umbrella term for a collection of lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma.

NHS Birmingham East and North offers screening clinics to help aid diagnosis of COPD. It also offers clinics to review patients with COPD.

As part of the self-management programme patients are given care plans.

Who can use the service

COPD and respiratory patients. The service is available if you are registered with GPs in the NHS Birmingham East and North area. See: are you a patient covered by NHS Birmingham East and North?.

How to use the service

You can be referred to our service through your GP or other healthcare professional. You can also contact us direct to discuss any issues you may have.

Where we provide the service

We offer the service at the Partners in Health Centre, Yardley, and Hawthorns Surgery, Sutton Coldfield.

Clinics are provided in GP surgeries and health centres across the NHS Birmingham East and North area.

When we provide the service

Opening times: 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, including bank holidays.

What if I can’t use the service?

Contact us for advice, or ask your GP about other services. NHS Direct may also help.

What to expect when you attend for the first time

At your visit, you will undertake a screening process to aid diagnosis. Once diagnosed you will be offered a full consultation.

How you can look after yourself

If you smoke, stop. We will give you further advice specific to your circumstances when we see you.
