Immunisations

Girl receiving immunisationImmunising your child is the best way to protect children from disease. Plus, you will need to get immunised against seasonal flu and if you are travelling to particular countries. Find out more at NHS Choices: Vaccinations.

 

Childhood immunisation schedule

Children need to be immunised at regular intervals as they develop. Contact your GP to find out about the immunisation clinics on offer.

HPV vaccination for girls

The HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccination helps protect against the viruses that cause cervical cancer.

  • Girls aged 12-13 across Birmingham are being offered the vaccine in schools
  • Girls aged 15 to 16 who have not yet had the vaccine will also be offered the vaccine at school
  • Women aged 16 to 18 can also have the vaccine, either through school or at local clinics or health centres

MMR catch-up campaign

The MMR vaccine is the safest way to protect someone against measles, mumps and rubella.

Two doses of the vaccine are required. Children are usually given the first dose at around 13 months, and the second at 3 years 4 months.

Contact your GP to find out about MMR immunisation.

Anyone under 18 who has not received the full course should contact their GP.

Travel vaccination

You must check whether you need to immunised against serious diseases before you travel abroad.

Seek advice from your GP, practice nurse or pharmacist.

Seasonal flu vaccination

Some groups are more at risk of serious illness if they catch seasonal flu. If you have a serious heart complaint, asthma, or are over 65, you should get the seasonal flu jab.
