Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and Language Therapists work with adults who have difficulty with communication or with eating, drinking and swallowing.

All Speech and Language Therapists working in NHS Birmingham East and North are registered with the Health Professions Council (HPC).

Who can use this service?

We provide services to clients who are registered with a GP in NHS Birmingham East and North PCT or Heart of Birmingham Teaching PCT.

We see people over 16 who have communication or swallowing difficulties due to:

Where is the service provided?

Adult Speech and Language Therapy is provided in certain clinics across the district. At present these include Stockland Green Primary Care Centre, Summerfield Primary Care Centre, Saltley Health Centre and Castle Vale Health Centre. If you are unable to attend a clinic due to health or mobility problems you may be seen at home. We also see clients in residential and nursing homes.

When is the service provided?

Between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.

What if I can’t use this service?

If you are unsure who to contact to get help, please telephone us to discuss your situation.

What can I expect when I attend for the first time?

In the first instance you will be invited to Stockland Green Primary Care Centre for an initial assessment of your needs. This usually takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. If it is felt that you need Speech and Language Therapy you will be offered an agreed number of appointments. This will be provided in the clinic that is most convenient for you. Alternatively, if you are unable to attend clinic assessment and therapy may be provided in your own home.

What can I do to help myself?

This depends upon your individual difficulties. Your speech and language therapist may suggest strategies to help with your communication or swallowing or may give you certain exercises or tasks for you to carry out in-between sessions. It is important for you to follow the advice given in order to get maximum benefit from Speech and Language Therapy.
