Pain management

The pain management service at NHS Birmingham East and North aims to provide rapid access to a pain assessment service, consistent early advice and treatment, avoid unnecessary referral to hospital, use local clinics and review patient medication.

It offers assessment by several specialists, including physiotherapists, doctors and psychologists, depending on individual needs. If hospital care is necessary, you will be offered a choice of hospitals.

The service can also request:

  • Investigations (x-ray, MRI, blood tests) if required
  • Referral to services like physiotherapy, Active for Life pain advice and exercise groups, pain management group, nutrition and dietetics, and biomechanics
  • Referral to other voluntary or exercise groups

Who can use the service

People who have had back pain for more than six weeks and who would otherwise be referred to a hospital pain clinic. The service is unable to see people under 18 years old or who have been recently injured.

The Pain Management service is available to anyone registered with a GP in NHS Birmingham East and North. Find out if you are covered by NHS Birmingham East and North.
