Physiotherapy
The physiotherapy service aims to provide a comprehensive, primary care based, physiotherapy service to the registrants of Birmingham East & North. It provides out patient clinic services in several locations across NHS localities. Home assessment and treatment is also provided for those patients who are unable to attend clinics. due to mobility issues, respiratory problems or age related conditions.
Community physiotherapy
The service assesses, plans & implements programmes of care to a wide range of conditions including musculoskeletal, neurology and those mentioned above. It liaises with a wide range of users and providers in both primary and secondary care. The Service also provides advice, treatment and workstation assessments for PCT staff as part of Improving Working Lives

Orthopaedic triage
This service provides assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal patients who would otherwise be referred for an orthopaedic opinion in secondary care. This includes:
- paper triage of referrals
- face-to-face contact for assessment
- arranging appropriate investigations
- providing interventions such as injections
- reviewing patients with results or following interventions
- onward referral, where necessary, to primary care, secondary care and community-based services
The Orthopaedic Triage Service includes the operational systems for ‘Choose and Book’ and ‘Choice at the point of Referral’ which facilitate patients gaining access to timely appointments in primary and secondary care. The triage service is clinically led by a Consultant Physiotherapist.
The orthopaedic triage service provides specialist assessment, investigation, advice and management of non-urgent orthopaedic problems that may need surgery.
Pain management
The multidisciplinary service supports patients with unresolving or chronic low back pain of more than six weeks duration who are referred by a BEN GP. The Low Back Pain Service is clinically led by a Consultant in Pain Management and provides assessment, advice and treatment from a multidisciplinary team including a GP’s with special Interests (GPwSI), Clinical Psychologist and Physiotherapists.
Following multidisciplinary assessment patients may be offered:
Investigations:
- MRI, X-ray, relevant blood tests can be arranged if required
Treatment:
- Individual physiotherapy
- Patients requiring a secondary care intervention (facet joint injection, epidural) can, subject to patient choice, be directly listed at HoEFT (Heart of England Foundation Trust and will be followed up in primary care.
- Other primary care services (including dietetics, specialist obesity services & biomechanics)

The pain management service aims to provide rapid access to a pain assessment service, consistently early advice and treatment, avoid unecessary referral to hospital, use local clinics and review patient medication.
