1. Choice
- Women are welcome to breastfeed anywhere
- Wherever possible, a space where women can breastfeed is available (not the ladies toilets).
2. Comfort
If a ‘Mother and Baby Room’ is available, it should:
- be well lit, ventilated and heated
- have a comfortable seat for mother to sit and breastfeed
If a feeding area is available for breastfeeding mothers, this should not be in the immediate vicinity of the ladies toilets.
3. Hygiene Facilities
If a ‘Mother and Baby Room’ is available, it should:
- have hand washing facility and hand towels
- have a changing mat or table
- have a refuse bin for nappies, ideally lined with ‘yellow contaminated waste’ bag
- be maintained and kept clean
4. Accessibility
If a ‘Mother and Baby Room’ is available, it should be:
- located on ground floor if possible
- lift available if not
- have room for a double pushchair
- have a door which is easy to open
5. Attitudes
- staff have a positive attitude and welcome breastfeeding mothers
- staff are aware of the ‘Breastfeeding Friendly’ position of the business
