You said, we did: NHS Constitution

All primary care trusts in Birmingham undertook a consultation about the NHS Constitution in 2009-10.

What was the consultation about?

The NHS Constitution aims to provide an overview of what the NHS does. This consultation was about the possible addition of two new rights to the Constitution and the introduction of the new role of Constitution Champion, along with a number of potential patient rights for the future.

Who was asked their views?

Patients, local residents and communities, GPs, staff.

What did people say?

There was positive response towards the shift in emphasis from targets to patients rights The majority of consultees agreed that there should be additional patient rights.

What was the result?

A report was written and submitted to the Strategic Health Authority (SHA) in January 2010 who in turn submitted it to the Department of Health (DOH).
