Give binge drinking the boot this World Cup!

With the England football team gearing up for the World Cup in South Africa, football fever is sure to grip Birmingham. Fans across the city will be hooked to the big game, whether it be at home or in the pub, and will most likely find themselves drinking more to help them through those tense games!

The Birmingham Drug and Alcohol Action Team have put together some top tips to remember when you’re drinking this World Cup.

Foul Play!

Alcohol can make you feel more aggressive, so if your mates are getting argumentative, step in calmly and try to sort it out. Steer them away from drinking any more alcohol, and think about getting them some water or a soft drink while they calm down.

Try drinking a soft drink in between alcoholic drinks – a tonic looks the same with or without vodka.

You don’t want to end up with a red card!

Football banning orders will be in place for anyone who causes trouble during the World Cup. Alcohol related violence will not be tolerated! Drinking one too many could get you in a situation you wouldn’t normally. Do you really want to be banned from the watching the rest of the games??

Try to eat before you go out to reduce the effects of your drinking.

Play it safe

Everyone reacts differently to alcohol. Your height, weight and gender are just some of the factors that play a part in how alcohol affects you. Even what you’ve had to eat that day or how much sleep you’ve had recently can make a difference to how you feel when you drink.

So, if you want to enjoy a drink while watching the football your best bet is to stick to the recommended guidelines. 2-3 units a day for women and 3-4 units a day for men with 3-4 alcohol free days.

Leave the car at home

Anyone caught drink driving will be banned from the road for at least 12 months, and fined up to £5,000. You can also be sent to prison for up to six months. Imprisonment, the period of disqualification and size of fine depend on the seriousness of the offence.

Going to the pub to watch the big game? Leave the car at home – it’s not worth the risk! Try finding your local taxi firm to get a lift.
