Who we are and what we do
NHS Birmingham East and North is a primary care trust, and is responsible for improving the health and wellbeing of the 440,000 people it serves across 17 diverse wards in the east and north of the city.
Primary care trusts manage the care provided by people you normally see when you first have a health problem, such as GPs, dentists, or walk-in centres, in a particular geographic area. NHS Birmingham East and North serves the following areas (also known as our localities):
- Bordesley Green, South Yardley and Acocks Green
- Hodge Hill and Washwood Heath
- Kingstanding and Oscott
- Sheldon, Shard End, Stechford and Yardley North
- Stockland Green, Erdington and Tyburn
- Sutton (Four Oaks, New Hall, Trinity and Vesey wards)

How the trust serves its communities
The trust commissions – plans and pays for – services from others, including GPs, dentists, pharmacists, and opticians. The trust is held accountable for the quality and accessibility of these services. Find out more about the commissioning role of NHS Birmingham East and North.
Other trust responsibilities
NHS Birmingham East and North is responsible for Sutton Cottage and the John Taylor Hospice, Erdington. Plus, it is the lead commissioner for mental health, learning disabilities and sexual health in the city.
It also hosts the infrastructure functions of estates, IT and finance and contractor services for all three Birmingham primary care trusts. And it hosts the West Midlands Specialised Services Commissioning Team, which commissions specialised services on behalf of the region.

Trust history
The trust was formed on 1st October 2006, following the amalgamation of the previous Eastern Birmingham PCT and North Birmingham PCT. Many of its Community Health Services were transferred to Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Trust on 01 December 2010.
