New access and wellbeing project launched

NHS Birmingham East and North has launched a new access and wellbeing project in partnership with Healthcare at Home and the Pan Birmingham Mental Health Joint Commissioning Team. The 12 month pilot – the access and wellbeing project – has been set up to improve the wellbeing and quality of life for those living with serious mental ill health in Sheldon and Shard End.

Access and wellbeing teams will work with GPs and other healthcare professionals to offer patients a more personalised care in a setting of their choice A 24 hour telephone care bureau has also been set up where patients can get help and advice with a range of issues. People will also be provided with support to improve their physical health and support with housing and employment.

The project hopes to ultimately reduce hospital admissions and length of stay in secondary care for patients with mental health issues.

Tom Howell, Primary Care Mental Health Commissioner, said: “We are really excited about the Access and Wellbeing Project, which we are confident it will be a real benefit to people who use the service over the next 12 months. Whether patients need a one-off assessment and simple advice or more intensive coaching and support, we will make sure that all their needs are met.”
